SBI ATM loot case; 2 accused arrested


Bonai: Police have arrested two persons and seized cash worth Rs 17.18 lakh from their possession here on Tuesday. As per police, the duo had stolen Rs 25.18 lakh cash from a State Bank of India ATM counter at Gurundia in Sundargarh district on last Saturday.

The accused were identified as Jiten Pradhan (22), an employee of private ATM management agency CMS and his accomplice Oushad Kumar Kalendi, a driver.

The theft occurred on Saturday when Jiten hacked the password of the ATM of one his colleague and stole the cash. A case was registered in this connection.

Apart from the recovered cash, a CPU and a car (Honda Amaze OD-14-J-7840) used in the theft were also seized from their possession. Later the two were produced at a court in Bonai.

Jena said Pradhan masterminded the loot as he was entrusted with replenishing local SBI ATM’s with cash.

Pradhan, accompanied by Kalendi, went to the ATM in a car late on Saturday night and entered the ATM by opening its shutter. There, he hacked the password of the ATM and looted cash worth Rs 25 lakh . He gave away Rs 10 lakh and the CPU to Kalendi to cover up his tracks and fled with the remaining cash.

Police started an investigation over a complaint and raided Kalendi’s house at Phalsaghat where they recovered the cash and the CPU. Kalendi admitted to the crime during interrogation and revealed the name of Pradhan as the mastermind behind the theft.

Police made a surprise raid at Pradhan’s house and arrested him.

He confessed to his crime and admitted to have hacked the ATM by obtaining its password from one of his colleagues.
