Cuttack: The Orissa High Court has granted anticipatory bail to the vice-chancellor of Sambalpur University and two others who have been accused in connection with the suicide of a contractual employee.

The court has directed the trio to cooperate in the investigation.

The contractual employee Dinabandhu Mishra, had succumbed to burn injuries after attempting self-immolation when the academic council meeting of the varsity was underway in April this year.

The employee allegedly doused himself with petrol before setting himself afire inside the VC’s chamber. He was referred to Cuttack for treatment but succumbed to his 90% burn injuries on the way.

The employee had been working as a technical assistant at the university since 1993, but his service was not regularised despite several requests.

The VC allegedly humiliated the employee for apparently leaking the information of the felling of trees in front of the university’s administrative building.
