Russia on Thursday launched a new series of missiles and drones attack at Ukraine, causing huge damage to a thermal power plant causing a cut off electricity to more than 218,000 consumers, the energy ministry said.
The attack on energy infrastructure in four regions also damaged equipment and wounded seven workers.
According to Kyiv, the attacks have destroyed half of Ukraine’s energy-generating capacity since March, leading to rolling blackouts. Russia claims that energy facilities are valid military targets and that some of the attacks were in retaliation for Ukrainian assaults on Russian territory.
The Ukrainian air force reported shooting down five out of nine missiles and 27 drones launched by Russia across 10 Ukrainian regions during Thursday’s attack. Ukrainian drone attacks executed by the SBU security agency caused fires at fuel depots in the Russian regions of Tambov and Adygeyea early on Thursday, said a source from Kyiv intelligence.
Russian authorities previously stated that fires had erupted at two fuel depots following suspected drone attacks. The Ukrainian source mentioned that the depots provided supplies to the Russian military, and the strikes were intended to diminish their resources.
