Rourkela: Mr. Laxmi Dhar Mohanty, working as a Master Technician in the Traffic & Raw Materials department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) was felicitated at SAIL, Bhilai Steel Plant for contributing technical expertise for the normalization of operations.
The CGM In-charge (Blast Furnaces) of BSP presented an appreciation letter to Mr. Mohanty commending his dedication and exemplary display of workmanship.
Notably, on 3rd March 2020, a Torpedo carrying 385 tonnes of Hot Metal in Bhilai Steel Plant had got punctured at the vertical end during transportation near SMS-3. As a result, hot metal got spilled over the track and the Torpedo Ladle Car (TLC) got stuck up causing shut down of SMS-3. The crisis was first of its kind at BSP and needed immediate intervention.
The department concerned of BSP sought technical assistance from RSP to deal with the problem. Considering the vast expertise and workmanship of Mr. Mohanty, RSP management deputed him to extend help to restore normalcy. He reached Bhilai on 4th March and visited the site to assess the damage.
A team was formed comprising Mechanical, Traffic & Dispatch, Electrical, SMS-III and Blast Furnaces to carry out the job. A saddle was developed using in-house resources for the jacking purpose. The TLC weighing about 750 tonnes was lifted by hydraulic jacking. The damaged portion and jam were removed by lancing and gas cutting. Under the guidance of Mr. Mohanty, a Mould Car bogey was placed below the TLC and wooden slippers were placed on the Mould Car in criss-cross shape. The body of the torpedo was then lowered on it. The damaged TLC was pulled with a locomotive and simultaneously pushed from the back. The effort yielded result and the load could be cleared. The effort helped the department in repairing the track and restoring normalcy at the earliest.
