Adelaide: On the eve of the second Test for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India’s captain Rohit Sharma announced his return to the middle-order batting lineup. Speaking to the media in Adelaide on Thursday, Rohit confirmed that KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal would be the opening batsmen for India in the upcoming pink-ball Test.
“Yeah, he will be opening the batting. I will bat somewhere in the middle,” Rohit said.
This marks a bold decision by captain Rohit Sharma, who has decided to relinquish his preferred opening position to KL Rahul following the latter’s pivotal role in India’s 295-run victory in Perth. During Rohit’s absence, Yashasvi and Rahul had formed a significant 201-run partnership in the second innings at Optus Stadium.
Since 2019, Rohit Sharma has exclusively served as an opener for India, a role that was solidified by the then-captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri, which significantly improved his performance in Test cricket. Rohit has since played in 42 Tests as an opener, amassing nearly 3000 runs at an average of 44, including 9 centuries.
