Republic Day Address: President urges people to exercise franchise in Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind has urged the people to exercise their franchise in the upcoming general elections to be held in April-May this year.

The nation celebrates the 70th Republic Day on Saturday.

In his address to the nation on Republic Day eve, President Kovind described the “Republic Day as an opportunity for the citizens of the country to remember independence, equality and brotherhood.”

In a broadcast  to the nation on Friday evening, Kovind said: “This year, the citizens of India will get a chance to fulfill an important responsibility. All of us have to use our voting rights in coming general elections for 17th Lok Sabha. This election will be special as 21st century born voters will vote for the first time.”

Terming this Independence Day as special, President Kovind said on October 2 the nation will observe the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi who led  and inspired the oppressed societies in Asia, Africa and elsewhere to freedom from colonial rule.

Kovind said Gandhiji remains the moral compass of our Republic and added his teachings are still the touchstone to measure our policies and initiatives.

The President said his 150th anniversary is not for India alone rather it is a joy to be shared with the world over.
