Record set by mass nesting of 3.7 lakh olive ridley turtles


Ganjam: Olive Ridley turtles awed nature lovers by setting record for mass nesting this year at Rushikulya beach in Ganjam.

Around 3.7 lakh of the endangered marine species turned up the beach for mass nesting, said District Forest Officer Asish Kumar Behera.

This is an all-time record in the past 24 years at the Marine wildlife Sanctuary, said the forest officials.As the mass nesting process is underway, more sea turtles are expected to be part of the process in the coming days.

A team was formed under the leadership of DFO for regular patrolling and securing the endangered species since November last year with the beginning of their breeding season
