Bhubaneswar: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari conducted a review of the rainfall and flood situation in Odisha, as well as the response measures implemented due to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The meeting, attended by Special Relief Commissioner Deoranjan Kumar Singh, Additional DG Sanjay Kumar, and other senior officials, was held at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office in Bhubaneswar.
Following the review, the minister reported that all 30 districts of the state experienced heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours. The highest rainfall occurred in Malkangiri district, with Koraput also suffering from significant downpours.
All District Magistrates have been instructed to stay vigilant for any emergencies due to the heavy rains. In Malkangiri district, a substantial number of people have been evacuated and placed in relief shelters, where they will remain until the floodwaters fully subside.
The state government is actively managing the situation in collaboration with district and block authorities, and the Chief Minister is closely overseeing the developments. The situation is firmly under control. There was one injury reported as a result of a landslide.

The depression over interior Odisha moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 22 kmph during the past 6 hours, and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 10th September 2024 over North Chhattisgarh & adjoining interior Odisha near latitude 21.7°N and longitude 83.3°E, about 90 km west-southwest of Jharsuguda (Odisha), 70 km west-northwest of Sambalpur (Odisha), 120 km east-southeast of Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) and 170 km east-northeast of Raipur (Chhattisgarh).
It is very likely to move west-northwestwards across north Chhattisgarh and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over Chhattisgarh and adjoining East Madhya Pradesh around the evening of 10th September.
Response to Deep Depression
- 30 ODRAF teams deployed in 12 districts and BMC
- 7 Fire Service teams deployed in Malkangiri
- 80 rescue boats deployed
- NDRF Teams deployed in Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Cuttack district
- 2 NDRF Teams were kept on standby in the Battalion headquarters
- BSF Mobilized to be pressed into service in case of large-scale evacuation
- MHA moved to place a helicopter for emergency Operations
- 14 medical teams and 5 Vet teams deployed in Makangiri
- 14 relief camps opened in Malkangiri
- 500 polythene packets sent to Malkangiri
- 1500 More packets are being sent today
- Koraput and Malkangiri districts have been communicated for the arrangement of free kitchens for the affected people due to the flood-like situation. It has also been requested to take measures like –
- District Emergency Operation Centre and Control Rooms of other offices must operate as per the recent guidelines issued with required manpower, communication equipment like phones, e-mail facilities etc. must be in working condition.
- Identifying all vulnerable people and shifting them to safe shelters is the 1st priority. For that purpose, all people living in kutcha houses/huts or living in low-lying areas may be identified and if required be evacuated and placed in safe shelters.
- Cooked food through free kitchens, safe drinking water, lighting, and health & sanitation facilities must be arranged for evacuated people housed in shelters.
De-watering:
- For Bhubaneswar 30 additional pumps, for Cuttack 10 additional pumps and for Puri 10 additional pumps are kept in readiness.
