Rath Yatra: DGP RP Sharma reviews security arrangements in Puri


Puri: Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma today held a review meeting of the security arrangements in Puri town for the ensuing Rath Yatra on July 4.

The meeting was held at the Town Hall here which was attended by several senior IPS officers. Hundreds of police officers were briefed on the security arrangements.

Talking to the media persons soon after the meeting, DGP Sharma said that there will be extra security arrangements in the railway station, bus stand, parking places and the Singhadwara and the entire Pilgrim town will remain under CCTV surveillance during Rath Yatra. He also added that the CCTVs will be monitored from the control room.

A total of 155 platoons of police forces, 2,400 home guards and a bomb disposal squad will be deployed during the 9-day-long sojourn of the deities to maintain law and order in the town

The Odisha DGP also informed that two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) will be kept in readiness to deal with emerging situations. “As many as 650 sub-inspectors and 15 officers in the rank of SP will be pressed into duty to monitor the security arrangements. Besides, 80 officers in the rank of DSP, the ODRAF and NDRF teams will be on duty” he said.

When asked about the coastal security, Sharma said that police officers have asked to work in coordination with the Coast Guard personnel.

With just four days left to the world famous Rath Yatra (car festival) of the Holy Trinity– Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, Odisha Police have beefed up security arrangements in and around Puri town for smooth conduct of the annual event.
