Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday cautioned that the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran could have significant consequences for India.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi highlighted concerns that the escalating conflict in West Asia may affect India’s economy and energy supply chains.

He warned that the “pain has just started,” suggesting the geopolitical tensions could lead to broader economic challenges if the situation continues to intensify.

Concern Over Strait of Hormuz and Energy Supply

During his remarks, Gandhi pointed out that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes—could directly impact India’s energy security.

He noted that a possible closure or disruption in the strait would affect the country’s access to oil and gas imports, which are vital for maintaining stable energy supplies.

Gandhi also said concerns about the availability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) were already emerging and could intensify if the conflict escalates further.

Questions on Energy Policy

The Congress leader also raised questions about India’s energy procurement strategy. He asked why India should allow the United States to influence decisions regarding where the country purchases its natural gas.

According to Gandhi, ensuring energy independence and diversified supply sources is essential for protecting India’s long-term economic stability.

Protest in Parliament

Gandhi made the remarks while participating in a protest by opposition members in New Delhi over alleged shortages of LPG supplies. During the protest, he was seen wearing traditional Konyak Naga ornaments, drawing attention to the issue while addressing the media and fellow lawmakers.
