Rahul Gandhi retains Raebareli Lok Sabha seat, Priyanka Gandhi to contest from Wayanad

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will retain his Raebareli Lok Sabha seat while his sister and party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will make her electoral debut from the Wayanad seat.

Addressing a presser outside his residence, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Rahul Gandhi won two Lok Sabha seats but as per the law, he has to vacate one seat. Rahul Gandhi will keep the Raebareli seat and vacate the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.”

Kharge further announced that Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would contest the elections from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.

“I have an emotional connection with Rae Bareli and Wayanad… I was an MP from Wayanad for the last 5 years… Everyone gave me a lot of love there… I thank everyone from my heart for this… Priyanka will contest from Wayanad… Together we will fulfil every promise made to Wayanad…,” said Rahul Gandhi.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to make her electoral debut in the Wayanad seat after her brother Rahul Gandhi vacated the position to retain the family bastion of the Raebareli seat.

This decision was reached after a meeting among top party leaders at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence. Rahul Gandhi, who contested in both the Rae Bareli and Wayanad constituencies, emerged victorious by significant margins.

In Rae Bareli, he defeated BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh by 390,030 votes, aiming to safeguard the party’s stronghold in the state after losing Amethi in 2019.

Moreover, Rahul Gandhi triumphed in Wayanad, securing his entry into the Lok Sabha in 2019 by defeating Communist Party of India-Marxist candidate Annie Raja by 364,422 votes.
