New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday approved the Ordinance to bring in stricter punishments for attacks against health workers.
The President gave nod to the promulgation of The Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 to bring in stricter punishments for attacks against health workers.
This has been brought in after a series of attacks on medical staff treating Covid-19 patients.
According to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare the law was brought in to make such atrocious acts of violence ‘cognizable and non-bailable offences’ and to compensate for physical harm to healthcare personnel or for damage or loss to property.
The Ministry said: “The amendment makes acts of violence cognizable and non-bailable offences. Commission or abetment of such acts of violence shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of three months to five years, and with fine of Rs.50,000/- to Rs.2,00,000/-”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the move and said that “it will ensure the safety” of India’s healthcare professionals.
