Bhubaneswar: Addressing the convocation ceremony at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), President Droupadi Murmu underscored the critical role of agriculture in India’s development. She highlighted the pressing challenges posed by climate change and resource exploitation, urging the need for innovative solutions to sustain agricultural productivity.
In her speech, President Murmu emphasized that the overall development of the country is intrinsically linked to the progress of agriculture and the welfare of farmers. “Agriculture is facing unprecedented challenges such as natural disasters, adverse effects of climate change, and the excessive exploitation of natural resources,” she stated. “To overcome these hurdles, our scientists must develop and disseminate timely technologies.”
The President called for a focus on environmental protection, soil health, and the conservation of water and other natural resources. She pointed out that rising temperatures and increasing greenhouse gas emissions are significantly impacting agricultural production. “Agricultural scientists have a crucial responsibility to address these issues,” she added.
President Murmu also expressed concern over the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which have detrimental effects on soil, water, and the environment. She encouraged young scientists to find sustainable solutions to these problems and contribute to the nation’s goal of becoming a developed country by 2047.
The convocation ceremony marked a significant milestone for the graduating students, whom President Murmu urged to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world challenges. “Your innovative ideas and dedicated actions are essential for nation-building,” she told the graduates.
The event highlighted the importance of agriculture in India’s economic growth and the need for continuous innovation to tackle the evolving challenges posed by climate change and resource management.
