Rayagada: A pregnant woman was carried on a stretcher for 2 km due to poor road connectivity to Mandipita village under Jaligada block in Rayagada district last night.
According to sources, Sangita Majhi (22), of the same village, developed labour pain last night. Following which, her husband Pungara Majhi called their neighbour but no one came for help.
Later, he reached Maa Santoshi public welfare foundation centre situated at Bankakunthu and intimated the matter to Chittaranjan Nanda, supervisor of the centre.
After that, Chittaranjan contacted the emergency service while alerting other staff of the centre. However, the ambulance driver expressed his inability to reach the village due to poor road connectivity.
With no option left, Chittaranjan along with Dr Samrendra Patra, Pharmacist Arun Kumar Sethi, Asha worker Santara Harijan reached the village and carried the woman on a stretcher for 2 km.
She was initially rushed to Bankakunthu hospital and later shifted to Kalyansinghpur community health centre where her health condition is stated to be stable now.
