Prajnesh Beats Brayden, Advances To 2nd Round Of US Open Qualifiers

Washington: India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran advanced into the second round of the US Open 2021 tennis men’s singles qualifiers after defeating Brayden Schnur of Canada in the first round on Wednesday.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran, the world No. 156, defeated the world No. 232 Brayden Schnur in straight sets in an hour and 37 minutes.

While the 31-year old Indian was broken once in the first set, he broke his Canadian opponent’s serve twice to seal the opener.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran will face world No. 216 Christopher Eubanks of the USA in the second round of qualifying on Thursday.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran is the only Indian left in the qualifying draw after Ankita Raina (women’s singles), Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal (both men’s singles) all lost their first-round matches in three sets each.

Sixteen players will enter the main draw of the US Open men’s singles event through the qualifiers.

The main draw of the US Open will start on August 30 at Flushing Meadows with the men’s singles final scheduled on September 12.
