Tsunami sounded as 7.4 magnitude quake strikes New Zealand


Wellington: A powerful earthquake with a severe magnitude of 7.4 struck northeast of Christchurch, a city of New Zealand at around 4:30 pm IST on Sunday, the USGS said.

The preliminary reports of casualties and damages is yet to be ascertained as warnings of Tsunami has been issued.

Christchurch is the biggest city of New Zealand’s south Island. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the centre of the quake was roughly 91 km from the city as the New Zealand Ministry of civil defense has alerted a Tsunami warning and urged people in the area to move high ground.

New Zealand which lies in the notorious Ring of Fire is a frequent victim of quakes. In 2011 February a 6.3 magnitude quake killed 185 people and caused a widespread damage in the city.
