Police including SDPO attacked during raid on gambling den

Malkangiri: Tension erupted at Marangpalli village under Kalimela police limits in Odisha’s Malkangiri district today as locals attacked cops including an SDPO here.

According to sources, a police party conducted a raid on a gambling den after receiving reliable information. Opposing the interference of the cops, the locals allegedly attacked the police party.

Police have detained at least 12 villagers and further investigation is on.

Sources said usually locals take part in gambling on various occasions. But in the past few days gambling had been a source of earning quick bucks for some groups in the area.

The gambling sport of rooster fighting is ruling during the Makar Sankranti season in Malkangiri despite warnings by police has been continuing since years.

While the stakes were small in the traditional rooster fight in the villages, the sport has taken a bloody turn in recent years with blades tied to the roosters’ legs and rural audiences watching the birds go at one another until one gives up and bleeds to death.

To add to the excitement in the rooster fight arenas, betting on card games and liquor is made available for special guests in select stands.
