Phase-wise launch of Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project due to land acquisition problem

Ahmedabad: Phase-wise launch of Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will be done due to delayed land acquisition in Maharashtra, Railway Board Chairman YK Yadav said.

The bullet train project has encountered hurdles in Maharashtra following  protests from farmer groups and the state government.

The neighbouring Gujarat has not witnessed any problem relating to land acquisition for Bullet train project.

Yadav said the Ministry of Railways is prepared to operationalise the corridor till Vapi in Gujarat if there is further delay. Maharashtra government assured the Centre that 80% of land acquisition work will be completed in the next four months itself.

In Maharashtra, land acquisition on certain stretches such as Palghar, has been particularly problematic with opposition from civil society and political parties, the Maha-Vikas Aghadi coalition government in Maharashtra has been non-committal to the project as well.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) agreed to provide a soft loan of Rs 88,000 crore to India for the project.
