Mumbai: The state-run oil marketing companies on Monday once again hiked the price of petrol by 35 paise per litre. However, the price of diesel remained unchanged.

The 35th price hike in two months has made petrol costlier by Rs 9.46 per litre since May 4, a day after results of five assembly polls were declared. Although diesel rates remained unchanged on Monday, they rose by Rs 8.63 per litre in the last two months.

With the latest hike, petrol rates in Delhi and Kolkata have come close to the Rs 100 mark. Petrol in Delhi is priced at  Rs 99.86 per litre and Rs 99.84 per litre in Kolkata.

Petrol has, however, crossed the Rs 100 mark in three metros — Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. The financial capital on Monday priced petrol at Rs 105.92 per litre.

Fuel prices are dependent on the state and central government taxes, in addition to other charges such as import charges, port duty, freight charges, excise duty and the international price of crude oil per barrel. Value Added Tax (VAT) makes up the largest chunk of the increase in prices.
