New Delhi: Congress MPs will hold a demonstration in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue 10.15am against the hike in domestic cooking gas, petrol and diesel price.
Parliament witnessed a ruckus on Tuesday as Opposition members protested against the fuel price rise after over a four-and-a-half month long hiatus. Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet cleared a bill aimed at merging Delhi’s three municipal corporations, a move that is likely to escalate the tussle between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party ahead of the civic polls.
While opposition members in Lok Sabha staged a walkout demanding a rollback, proceedings in Rajya Sabha were adjourned twice in the first half after Chairman Venkaiah Naidu rejected the opposition plea for a discussion on the fuel hike. In Lok Sabha, leaders from Congress, DMK, TMC, NCP, JMM and Left parties among others staged a walkout demanding the immediate withdrawal of price hike of fuel and LPG.
Congress MP Shakti Sinh Gohil gave Suspension of Business notice under Rule 267 in Rajya Sabha, to discuss the increases in prices of LPG cooking gas and fuel prices.
Economists expect the gradual fuel price increases to add up to anywhere between ₹9 to ₹12 per litre of diesel and petrol, which could go up to as much as ₹20 a litre if the average global crude oil price rises to $110-120.
