Panchuka Begins, Devotees Throng Puri Srimandir

Puri: Score of devotees from across the State thronged Puri Srimandir to have a darshan of the holy trinity on the occasion of Panchuka (last five days of the holy month of Kartika) which began today.

Elaborate arrangements for smooth conduct of rituals have been made by the Puri Police and Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).

Panchuka Purnima is a sacred festival in the state of Odisha and is celebrated in the month of Kartik. Widows from across the state gather to perform rituals for their salvation and for the souls of their departed husbands during this festival.

As per popular practice, the last five days of Kartika month is when people who could not follow the rites for an entire month, fulfill the customs of strict austerity in these five days. The end of ‘Panchuka’ marks Kartika Purnima that celebrates Odisha’s maritime glory and trade relations with foreign countries in the ‘Boita bandana’ ritual. Habisyalis (widows) break their fast on that day after having observed complete austerity to receive ultimate salvation.
