Open Drain Mishap: BMC’s Drainage Division Asst Engineer Suspended

Bhubaneswar: Taking stern actions in connection with the open drain mishap that claimed the life of a minor boy, the state government on Thursday suspended an Assistant Engineer in the Drainage Division of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

After receiving the investigation report of the tragic incident, BMC’s Drainage Division Assistant Engineer Santosh Kumar Das has been suspended and departmental disciplinary action has been taken against him.

A 9-year-old boy drowned in the canal while going to fetch a balloon floating in the canal and died in the ​​Unit-3 Masjid Colony on the 18th of June. He was rescued by the ODRAF team near the Laxmi Sagar canal and admitted to the Capital Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the family of the deceased boy.

State Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krishnachandra Mohapatra visited the open drain mishap spot and sought a detailed report from the authorities. The minister has said that strict action will be taken against the culprits in this incident. The authorities immediately investigated the incident and submitted the report.

The report highlighted that the drainage area where the child fell was not fenced off. Assistant engineer Mr Das, who was in charge of Drainage Division No. 5, has been held responsible for not putting up a fence at such a sensitive place. Accordingly, the state government has taken strict action and suspended Mr Das today.
