Sundargarh: A homemaker was duped over Rs 23 lakh in an online scam in Sundargarh district, the police said on Thursday. The victim has been identified as the wife of a Professor in the district.
According to reports, a suspected fraudster befriended the woman on Facebook and lured her with the promise of expensive gifts. Later, the victim received a call on her mobile phone from another person.
The person, identifying himself as a custom officer from Delhi airport said that a parcel of costly jewellery in her name has been seized by the department.
In order to release the costly jewellery, the woman transferred a total of Rs 23.38 lakh cash online to several bank accounts in Delhi in around 40 phases to receive the parcel.
As she did not get any parcel despite huge amount of online payment, she finally realised that she has been cheated. With no option left, the victim approached the Crime Branch and lodged a written complaint.
While a case has been filed on the basis of the complainant, the crime branch has verified the phone numbers that had been used to call the woman for payment. Further investigation into the matter is underway, sources said.
