Odisha: Low Pressure Likely Over BOB, SRC Alerts Collectors

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Special Relief Commissioner has asked collectors of all the districts to remain prepared to meet any eventuality in view of a fresh low-pressure area likely to be formed over the Bay-of-Bengal.

Issuing a letter, the SRC said, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over northeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood around 20th September 2020. In association with this system, widespread rainfall activity over Odisha with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over some districts of state during 20th to 23rd September 2020.

“Squally weather surface wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph is very likely over northeast adjoining east central BOB from 20th September, 2020. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the deep sea of these and whoever in the deep-sea area advised to return to the coast by 20th September,” the letter read.

Following this, the SRC has asked the collectors to monitor the situation closely and to remain prepared to meet any water-logging, localised flood-like situation including urban areas, local flash floods in hilly areas and landslides.

As per the special bulletin issued by Indian Meteorological Department, the Low Pressure Area over Telangana & adjoining south Chhattisgarh has become less marked. However, the associated cyclonic circulation now lies over Telangana & neighbourhood and extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height.

Western end of the monsoon trough runs close to foothills of Himalayas. The Eastern end passes
through Bareilly, Varanasi, Hazaribagh, Malda and thence eastwards to Nagaland across Bangladesh and Assam & Meghalaya.

September 2020, the IMD added.

It further stated that Light to moderate rainfall has occurred at many places over the districts of South Coastal Odisha and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha with heavy rainfall at one place over the district of Rayagada of South Interior Odisha.

Day 1 (valid from 1330 hrs IST of 16.09.2020 up to 0830 hrs IST of 17.09.2020): Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of South Odisha, North Coastal
Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and at one or two places over the rest districts of Odisha.

Day 2 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 17.09.2020 up to 0830 hrs IST of 18.09.2020): Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Interior Odisha, Gajapati, Ganjam and at one or two places over the rest districts of Odisha.

Day 3 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 18.09.2020 up to 0830 hrs IST of 19.09.2020): Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada and at a few places over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning ( Be Updated): 1.Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj.

2. Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput.

Day 4 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 19.09.2020 up to 0830 hrs IST of 20.09.2020): Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of South Odisha and at a few places over the districts of North Odisha.

Yellow Warning ( Be Updated): 1. Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nawarangpur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Ganjam, Puri, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore.

2. Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nawarangpur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada.

Day 5 (valid from 0830 hrs IST of 20.09.2020 up to 0830 hrs IST of 21.09.2020): Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of Odisha.

2. Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati,
