Bhubaneswar: Odisha has shown enormous growth from the period 1990 to 2017, as per the State Bank of India’s report on Human Development Index (HDI).
As per the report, Odisha is among the top ten performing States in terms of HDI improvement and is the best-performing State in Eastern India in this category.
Odisha has also secured the third position in terms of Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of Social expenditure at 15.1%. Besides, it is also a top performer in terms of improvement in per capita income, due to higher economic growth rate.
The top 10 performing States are:
- Himachal Pradesh
- Tamil Nadu
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Andhra Pradesh
Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have seen a significant jump in their HDI rank, while most of the North Eastern states like Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur have slipped in the ranking.
States that were the worst performing during the 1990s are presently doing well in the social parameter since 2014. For e.g. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh Odisha and Madhya Pradesh have seen the largest jump in a change in HDI value among the 25 major States in India.
Notably, the HDI measures long-term progress in three basic dimensions of Human Development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.
