Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the Presidential election, Bharatiya Janata Party has poured the confidence in the NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu.

Members and leaders of various district BJP units of Odisha on Sunday lightened earthen lamps and performed yagnas at temples. BJP Bhubaneswar unit leaders here have lightened lamps at Lingaraja temple and performed yagna at Bibhisaneswara temple for Murmu.

Other district units of Odisha have also prayed for Murmu’s victory in the polls, which will be held on July 18.

The nomination of Draupadi Murmu, an Adivasi leader from Odisha and the former Governor of Jharkhand, as NDA’s candidate for the forthcoming presidential election is seen as a calculated move by BJP to expand its social base, especially among the ST (Scheduled Tribe) communities.

After getting the support of some regional parties like BJD, YSR-CP, BSP, AIADMK, TDP, JDS, Shiromani Akali Dal and Shiv Sena, the vote share of Murmu has already crossed 60 per cent. It was around 50 per cent at the time of her nomination.

In June, the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the Election of the 16th President of India. The polls will be held on July 18. The counting will be taken up on July 21.

The term of office of President Ram Nath Kovind will end on July 24. The President is elected by an electoral college comprising elected members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. It also includes the Legislative Assemblies of Delhi and Puducherry.
