Bhubaneswar: Odia girl Shruthika Padhy created history as she became one of eight winners at the 92nd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor on Thursday.
The 13-year-old spelled “aiguillette” to solidify her spot in history.
Shruthika is a resident of New Jersey and is an eighth grader at Rosa International Middle School in Cherry Hill. She spelled the words, ‘limitrophe’, ‘aiguillette’ and ‘therblig’ correctly to lift the prestigious trophy.
It is the first time in the 94-year history of the competition that more than two co-champions have been named.
After 17 rounds and more than three hours of competition, the judges announced the competition would end after 20 rounds with any spellers remaining being named co-champions.
