Cuttack: A notorious criminal was arrested following an exchange of fire with the police near Malgodown area in Cuttack late last night.
The arrested man, identified as Manua alias Manoj Swain (28), sustained bullet injuries. He has been admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital here.
Besides, three police officials including, Malgodown police station IIC Rabi Narayan Bhanja were also injured in the gunfight.
According to sources, a police team launched an operation following a tip-off about Manua’s hideout in the backside of Biswaguru Law College. Spotting the cops in the area, Manua hurled two bombs at them injuring the IIC, SI Sunil Yadav and Havildar Gulam Mohammad.
In retaliation, the cops opened fire at him injuring him critically and nabbed him after that. The cops also seized three live bombs from his possession.
According to police, Manua was allegedly involved in slitting the throat of a sugar mill owner, Damodar Bhawsinka of Malgodown, after the latter refused to give him extortion money on the night of Saturday (March 16).
Several such criminal cases are pending against Manua at many other police stations in and around the city, the police added.
