Cuttack: A notorious criminal, Sk Gulzar Ahmed (34), has been arrested by the Commissionerate Police on Sunday on charges of extortion, criminal intimidation and illegal possession of arms.
Acting on a complaint lodged by one Abhijit Das, a student of city-based Christ College, Cantonment Police registered a case (181/19) U/s 341/323/294/386/506/34 IPC r/w Sec 25/27 Arms Act / Sec 7 Criminal law Amendment Act and arrested accused Gulzar today.
The police said that during the course of investigation it was established that Gulzar and his associates used to interfere in students’ affairs in Christ College and collect money from new entrants of the college by threatening and attacking them.
According to a press note, Gulzar and his associates had attacked Abhijit on the Barabati Stadium road after the latter refused to pay the demanded amount. They accused had also terrorised passersby by brandishing gun which led to a public panic situation and the shop keepers had to pulled down the shutters.
Based on prima-facie evidence, raids were conducted at probable hideouts of Gulzar and he was arrested. A double-barrel pistol used in the crime and a live bullet was also seized from his possession.
In the same context, a woman identified as Geetanjali Panda (40) was also arrested for abusing Constable Jyotirmayee Panda over the phone. Jyotirmayee was on duty at the Reception of DCP Cuttack office when she received a call from the woman identifying herself as the daughter-in-law of former MP of Kathagadasahi Akshay Panda.
The caller abused the constable and threatened to not let the students of Christ College, who had been to meet the DCP, for demanding Gulzar’s arrest. Further, based on a case registered at Bidanasi Police Station, three other persons, Sahil Parbez, Sk Imran Ahmed and Amarjit Behera, were arrested for threatening Prasanjit Das, the brother of Abhijit, to withdraw the case and compromise with Gulzar.
