Choudwar: A notorious criminal, who managed to evade arrest for the past nine years, has been apprehended by Choudwar Police in Cuttack.
According to reports, the police finally nabbed Kalia alias Kanhu Mohanty (35) after 3378 days of search efforts. The dreaded criminal, Kali was wanted for opening fire at Ajaj Samal of Choudwar Grid Colony in 2013.
Under the guidance of Choudwar police station IIC Biranchi Narayan Pati, a special police team finally managed to nab accused Kalia and produced him before the court.
On June 17, 2013, Kanhu Mohanty and his brother Sanjay Mohanty, in an inebriated condition, abused the daughter of Bishnu Samal of Grid Colony in obscene language. The duo also threatened Samal and his son with swords for opposing their act. After the intervention of locals, the matter was calmed down.
However, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon on that day, the accused sibling duo again reached Samal’s house and abused his wife. His son Ajay, who was present in the house, opposed this. In a fit of rage, Kalia pulled out a revolver and opened fire on Ajay, injuring him critically.
Fortunately, Ajay survived the gunshot and was immediately taken to the Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital.
During the police investigation, one of the accused, Sanjay Mohanty, surrendered before the court, but his brother Kalia, a dreaded criminal, fled.
Though Choudwar police made several attempts to nab Kalia, the absconding notorious criminal remained elusive and managed to evade arrest for nine years. However, his luck ran out after the special police team took up the task and apprehended him recently. There are many criminal cases registered against accused Kalia in Choudwar and Khuntuni police stations, sources in the police said.
