Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon breaks strict dress code rules: I do what I want

New York: Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios’ Wimbledon 2022 campaign has been entertaining, to say the least. After a controversy-filled game against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round of the tournament, which saw the Greek getting knocked out of the prestigious grass court championships, Kyrgios has hogged quite a bit of the limelight.

Both players took potshots at each other after the game where Tsitsipas called Kyrgios a bully for his behaviour. Kyrgios, who has not held back for once in his life, called Tsitsipas ‘soft’ and asked him to move on.

The reporter asked the player about the Wimbledon dress code and why Kyrgios chose to break it.

“It is interesting your comments earlier about the controversy that seems to materialise around you. We all know the Wimbledon dress code rules are very strict. Competitors must be dressed in suitable tennis attire that’s almost entirely white, and this applies from the point at which the player enters the court. Why would you walk on Centre Court with bright red trainers on and do an interview in a red cap?” he asked.

“Because I do what I want,” replied Kyrgios.

Reporter: You are above the rules?

“No, I am not above the rules.”

Reporter: They do not apply to you?

“I just like wearing my Jordans.”

Reporter: But there are rules specifically against that. I do not want to spoil the surprise, but the referees are going to be speaking to you about it afterwards.

“That is OK. I will wear some Triple Whites tomorrow.”

Reporter: So everyone else in both draws follows rules…

“No-one else. Even after Wimbledon, no-one else really walks with Jordans on the court.

Question: You have just moaned about the controversy that surrounds you.

” I do not moan. I love it.”

Reporter: You have laughed it off. That is all part of it then?

“Well, yes. More attention for me. What is that saying? Any publicity is good publicity, right?”

While the tournament authorities have not yet confirmed if the player would be reprimanded or not, Kyrgios seemed to be unapologetic about the incident.
