New virus similar to swine flu likely to cause next pandemic: Study

New Delhi: A new study has revealed that scientists in China have identified a new strain of flu virus with a potential to trigger a pandemic.

The new flu strain was detected even as the world is currently grappling to tackle coronavirus outbreak which has so far killed at least 502,599 people globally.

The study said the new influenza virus is similar to the 2009 swine flu but with some changes.

It further said that the new flu strain is carried by pigs and needs close monitoring. Systematic surveillance of influenza viruses in pigs is essential for early warning and preparedness for the next potential pandemic, the study added.
