New Covid strain reaches India, 6 UK returnees test positive
New Delhi: The most feared new mutant coronavirus strain has finally reached India as samples of six UK returnees tested positive on Tuesday.
The Union Health Ministry said while three cases were confirmed in Bengaluru, two in Hyderabad, one was found in Pune.
The Union Health Ministry said:”Samples of 3 UK returnees have been tested & found positive for new UK strain in NIMHANS, Bengaluru, two in Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad & one in National Institute of Virology, Pune. All 6 people have been kept in single room isolation”.
According to the information disclosed by the ministry, between November 25 and December 23, nearly 33,000 passengers disembarked at various Indian airports from the UK.
The mutant coronavirus is believed to be more lethal than the original strain of the virus. It first surfaced in Britain last week.
British premier Boris Johnson suspended all the celebrations and subsequently flights to and from the country were suspended by various countries including India.
