Naveen dedicates 38 new Aahar Kendras in 17 Odisha dists


Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today inaugurated 38 new ‘Aahar Kendras’ for the people of 38 urban areas in 17 districts of Odisha.

The Odisha CM dedicated the Aahar Centres through video conferencing from State Secretariat here.

According to a press note, with the introduction of these 38 new Aahar Kendras, the daily capacity to cater meals to the needy increased to one lakh meals per day. Earlier, the capacity was 85,000 meals.

The scheme will now cater all the 114 urban areas of the state. Besides, attendants of the patients in 56 major hospitals across Odisha can avail the facility in the night hours also.

Speaking on the occasion, Patnaik said, “Aahar is a popular scheme. Quality and cleanliness are the hallmarks of Aahar centres. With the cooperation of all stakeholders, around one lakh meals are currently being served at 157 Aahar centres across the State every day.”

The scheme is being implemented with the support from 17 stakeholders, while 65 special vehicles and 2,000 personnel have been engaged in the service.

Notably, the ‘Aahar’ scheme was launched by Odisha Government on April 1, 2015, to provide cooked meals to the poor and needy people at an affordable cost of Rs 5 at crowded places in urban areas.

Initially, the scheme was launched in five Municipal Corporations of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela with 21 ‘Aahar’ centres. Later, more ‘Aahar’ centres were launched.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also launched the official website of Aahar scheme. Through the web portal, people can make donations and sponsor the meals to the poor on one day.

Planning and Convergence Minister Usha Devi, Development Commissioner Asit Tripathy, Principal Secretaries and Secretaries of different departments, were also present in the launch event.
