In a first, a lawmaker from Odisha spoke in Santhali language in Rajya Sabha on Friday. BJD MP Sarojni Hembram spoke in the tribal language as she raised a matter of public importance during the zero hours.
She also demanded Bharat Ratna for Pandit Raghunath Murmu, who in 1925 created the Ol Chiki script for Santali, which is an Austroasiatic-Munda language spoken mostly by tribals in Odisha.
Hembram said Pt. Murmu is revered by tribals as a cultural icon in the State and the State Government has already recognised his contribution.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh too mentioned that this was the first time that the language was spoken on the floor of the House and welcomed the move.
