National Girl Child Day Observed By WCD & MS Dept

Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of National Girl Child Day, the Dept of WCD & MS organised a consultative meeting with the major stakeholders for addressing and minimising the discrimination on Girls and Women.

The consultation emphasised on the value of girl child and the urgent need for creating an enabling environment for the girls at home, community and institutions.

The Hon’ble Minister, WCD & MS, Ms.Tukuni Sahu, graced the occasion as special invitee, addressed the gathering and suggested to have a mass campaign against Dowry. She also emphasized to give more importance on focused activities to improve the status of girls and women in Odisha.

Ms.Anu Garg, Principal Secretary, W&CD and MS set the context for the meeting and asked for better suggestions from the participants on the issue. Director, ICDS &SW presented the schemes and programmes undertaken by the department. The Major Stakeholders present in the meeting were Dept. of Home; Dept. of Health and Family Welfare; Dept. of School and Mass Education; Dept. of Higher Education; Dept. of Technical Education; Dept. of Skill Development; Dept. of Labour; Dept. of SC & ST and Backward Class; Dept. of Sports and Youth; Dept. of PanchayatiRaj and Drinking Water; Dept. of Law and Development Partners-UNICEF and UNFPA. The participants shared the activities (Schemes/Programmes) and data collected relating to the issue.

At the District Level, various activities are being undertaken in this week to celebrate the National Girl Child Week (20th to 26″ January 2020). The activities include wall painting by the CCI children, community awareness through awareness videos, signature campaign, competitions in schools on the value of girl child and gender equality through slogan and painting competition, recognition of outstanding girls in various fields, selfie corners with a message for a social media campaign, mass pledge at the school etc.
