New Delhi: It was on this day last year that one of India’s tallest leader, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, passed away. Remembering Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) founder member, politicians and countrymen took to social media on Friday to pay tribute to the former prime minister on his first death anniversary.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ramnath Kovind and several of his cabinet colleagues also visited his memorial, Sadaiv Atal, at Rajghat in the national capital.
Reportedly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national working president JP Nadda and other leaders of the party were among the first persons to arrive at Sadev Atal to pay their homage.
Vajpayee’s daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya and granddaughter Niharika were also present at the memorial.
Sadaiv Atal, the memorial for the iconic leader, was unveiled on his 94th birth anniversary last December.
Vajpayee, the BJP stalwart, had died on August 16, 2018, after a period of prolonged illness.
He was one of the most loved Prime Ministers of India and an iconic leader. In 2014, Vajpayee was conferred Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
