Barang: Nandankanan Zoological Park here welcomed a new member as chimp Purnima delivered her fifth baby today.
According to the zoo’s medical team, the health condition of both Purnima and her newborn chimpanzee is stable.
Pampeta along with male chimp Julu was brought to Nandankanan on June 16, 1994 when she was only 3 years old, one year younger to Julu. The couple gave birth to Purnima on January 9, 2001. Later, Purnima and Julu gave birth to Kartik on October 14, 2009, who along with his partner Subhdra is now surviving in Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna.
The number of chimpanzees in Nandankanan has risen to seven, including Julu, Pampeta, Purnima, Lakshmi, Rakhi, Durga, and the newborn.
