Meghalaya mine tragedy: Naval divers find second body inside rat-hole mine


Meghalaya: The Indian Navy diving team on Saturday found the second body of a miner 280 feet inside coal mine at Ksan in East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya.

The Indian Navy had retrieved the first body from the mine on Thursday. Officials said the body was identified as that of Amir Hussain who hails from Assam’s Chirang district.

Twelve miners are still believed to be trapped inside the illegal rat-hole coal mine. The Indian Navy said in a statement the diving team finds second body 280ft inside the rat-hole mine.

Deputy commissioner of East Jaintia Hills Federick Dopth confirmed that Amir Hussain’s body was identified by his wife and mother.

He said efforts are on to transport the body to their residence after completion of formalities. His family said Hussain had worked in the mines one month in 2018 and had earned nearly Rs 60,000.
