Mayurbhanj: While the forest officials are trying their best to drive away elephants from human habitat, one herd returned to the Kaiphulia area under Udala block in Mayurbhanj district and triggered panic among locals.

Reports said forest officials had driven out a six-member pachyderm herd from the area yesterday. However, last night the jumbos returned to the village and attacked an elderly woman leaving her with critical injuries.

The injured, identified as Chandamani Kisku, has been admitted to a hospital in Udala. She was later shifted to Baripada hospital after her health condition deteriorated.

The elephant herd has been continuously wreaking havoc in the villages under Udala block despite officials launching operations to avoid man-animal conflicts, sources said.
