Malkangiri: A Maoist cadre was stoned to death allegedly by some locals of Janturai village under Papermetla police limits in Malkangiri district late last night during a face-off.
According to reports, two red rebels came to the Janturai village last night and tried to terrorise the residents with blank firing. They even threatened them not to celebrate Republic Day.
However, the warning irked the locals who took up a violent fight with rebels and started pelting stone at them. Following the sudden attack, a Maoist cadre reportedly died, while another suffered critical injuries.
Sources said the villagers had been opposing activities of violence by the red rebels in the region over the construction of roads.
The Maoists were taken in for surprise by retaliation by people. Later they beat a hasty retreat and fled from the village. However, one of the Maoists while fleeing was captured by the villagers. Later the mob comprising the angry villagers had beat him to death, the police said.
The security forces flanked by the State police personnel have rushed to the village to take stock of the situation. Security is being beefed up in the village as there is possibility of Maoists launching retaliatory attack on villagers, the official concluded.
