Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut starrer Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, a biographical account of how Rani Laxmibai waged a war against the East India Company, hit the theatres on Friday.
Manikarnika, a box office clash with Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Thackeray, has released across 3,700 screens worldwide.
Beginning with Amitabh Bachchan’s voiceover, Kangana Ranaut sets the pace right in the first 5 minutes with an action-packed scene where she is seen hunting down a tiger.
While Kangana Ranaut pulled off the lead character very strongly in the action sequences, television actress Ankita Lokhande looks impressive as Jhalkari Bai in the film.
Manikarnika or Manu, Lakshmi Bai, Rani of Jhansi -all these are the diminutives of the queen of the princely state of Jhansi in North India currently present in Jhansi district in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Born in Bithoor, Manikarnika was always known for her strength and bravery. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists.
The movie surrounds around the life of Rani Laxmibai (played by Kangana) and her campaign against the East India Company in the revolt of 1857, the first major revolt to happen in the country.
The film also stars actors including Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub Khan, Atul Kulkarni, Kulbhushan Kharbanda in important roles doing justice to their respective characters.
The venture is produced by Kairos Kontent Studios under the directorial of Krish Jagarlamudi, with an estimated budget of 75 crores.
