Man, his two sons-in-law held for slaughtering cattle in Sambalpur


Kuchinda: Police have arrested a man and his two sons-in-law on charges of slaughtering cattle at Bileigad Hadakutipada village under Mahulapalli PS limits in Sambalpur district.

The arrested persons have been identified as Paulus Munda (60), and his two sons-in-law Lukki Kechu (30) of Jharsuguda and Rakki Dhana (40) of Mahulapalli. The axe used in the crime has been seized from the spot and the body of the dead calf sent for post-mortem, sources said.

According to reports, the accused Paulus had bought a cow-calf from one Basant Ramjan of the same village on the pretext to domesticate it. On Tuesday evening, while the celebration of Nuakhai was underway in the village, one Ashok Rohidas heard a calf groaning in pain and rushed to Paulus house. On reaching there, he saw the Paulus’s sons-in-law holding the calf tight with a rope and Paulus thrashing the calf with a sharp axe.

Rohidas immediately informed the matter to the other villagers following which they reached the house when the trio was preparing the slice the dead calf into pieces for its meat. When the villagers opposed such heinous act, an irate Paulus threw the axe at Rohidas for informing others about it. However, Rohidas had a close shave.

After missing to hit Rohidas with the axe, accused Paulus rushed near him and bit the former’s finger. Later, Rohidas lodged a complaint about the matter with the local police.

Based on the FIR, a case was (122/19) registered and the trio arrested under Sections 294, 324, 506, 429, 306/43 of the IPC and Section 7 of the Orissa Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. They were forwarded to the court on Wednesday, the police said.
