Malkangiri: With Malkangiri Police keeping a close eye on vehicles smuggling cannabis from the district to other states, smugglers have now started taking the waterways to keep their business running.
Acting on a tip-off from reliable sources, Chitrakonda Police on Monday conducted a surprise raid at Dora Ghat and seized around 2.5 quintals of ganja which was about to be smuggled on a boat.
According to reports, police have arrested the smuggler identified as Sumant Sarkar (52), of MV-109 village in Balimela area, and the boat in with the ganja consignment was being smuggled.
Police seized 10 gunny bags stashed with dry cannabis weighing around 250 kilograms, estimated to be worth more than Rs 20 lakh. The arrested accused has been also forwarded to the court today.
