Male elephant ‘Chandan’ dies at Nandankanan zoo


Bhubaneswar: A male elephant named Chandan died at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

The NZP authorities said that the 10-year-old pachyderm fell ill on September 13. He was resued and was undergoing treatment. However, Chandan succumbed to his illness today at around 3.40 AM.

While it is suspected that the jumbo died of the herpes virus infection, the exact cause of the death of the animal will be revealed after the post-mortem report arrives, the zoo authorities added.
