New Delhi: Shivratri is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated by Hindus every year. It is celebrated in honour of Lord Shiva. Mahashivratri literally translates to the ‘Great night of Shiva’. This year Maha Shivratri will fall on Tuesday (March 1).
The devotees of Lord Shiva are all set to observe the Maha Shivratri vrat. There are several who opt for the ‘nirjala’ vrat, i.e where people consume no water or food throughout the day. However, not many can pull off this tough form of fasting, hence the majority of the devotees observe a fast where they can have fruits, milk and certain vegetables and non-grain items.
Milk-based dishes
Milk-based dishes like curd, barfi, makhane ki kheer are some food items that you can relish today as you pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for their abundant blessings. Also, if you like milk, try having it with a few dry fruits.
Fruits
When on a fast, fruits are your best friends! You can consume any fruit you like or prepare a fruit chaat. However, it is to be kept in mind that salt is generally avoided during fast.
Sweets or Sabudana
Home-made sweets you can try such as barfi etc to savour your taste buds a bit. Usually, one of the most commonly used food items during fast or vrat happens to be Sabudana or Sago. You can make many dishes with it such as Sabudana Khichdi – made of potato, sago pearls and peanuts, with a pinch of Sendha Namak (Rock Salt) which is used in all food preparations for vrat.
Potato-based dishes
Potato-based dishes are a must for any vrat observing person. Several dishes can be prepared using potatoes, just keep in mind the salt you use. You can also just boil the potatoes and eat them with curd.
