London to be put on highest alert as Covid cases rise
London: Authorities here will place the capital city under the highest level of Covid restrictions from Wednesday following “very sharp” spike in coronavirus cases.
The UK government announced in Parliament on Monday that London and its surrounding areas and a new variant of coronavirus being identified as responsible for the “faster spread”.
Britain’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the Parliament that “swift and decisive action” due to doubling rate of the deadly virus.
Hancock said: “A new variant of coronavirus has been identified in the UK, which may be associated with the fastest spread in the southeast of England”.
The minister said that experts had identified over 1,000 cases with the variant, predominantly in the south of England.
He stressed that mobile testing and community testing are also being expanded to put coronavirus at bay.
