Mumbai: Legendary vocalist Kishori Amonkar passed away late on Monday at her residence in the city. The 84 year old was suffering from an illness since the past few days.
The famous Hindustani vocalist was born on April 10, 1932 and hailed from the Jaipur gharana of music with mother Mogubai Kurdikar being one of the most revered gurus in the tradition.
Her rendered classical khayals composed in the most complex ragas of Hindustani music were highly acclaimed but so were the thumri, bhajans and film music.
She was presented the Padma Bhushan (1987) and Padma Vibhushan (2002) and in 2010, she became a fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
