Lawyers threaten with statewide cease work stir

Cuttack: Demanding advocates council and protesting amendment of Advocate Law 1961, lawyers across the state were on a cease work stir on Monday.  This led to halt in work in all courts including the Orissa High Court.

The 1961 law led to formation of the Indian Bar Council and councils in states too that provide license to advocates and look after their welfare. The Law commission had sought amendments for which it had asked Indian Bar Council to give suggestions. However, the state advocates allege that these suggestions go against the welfare of advocates and hence the lawyers in Odisha protested the amendments.

Advocates have threatened to continue the stir if the suggestions for amendments are not withdrawn.
