Nabarangpur: The last rites of Nabarangpur gang-rape and murder victim has been performed on the outskirts of Gumundali village under Kosagumuda Police limits in Nabarangpur district today in the presence of many mourners.
The mournful last rites were performed in the village burial ground in the presence of Nabarangpur sub-collector and many political leaders of the state and district.
According to sources, the 16-year-old victim went missing after 9 PM on Friday. Later, her body was recovered from an agricultural field on Saturday. On being informed by the locals, family members of the victim reached the spot and later lodged a complaint at a local police station.
Preliminary investigation of the police suggests that the girl was gang-raped and later murdered to destroy evidence. Police have also recovered two jeans pants and shoes of men near the girl’s body.
Meanwhile, Odisha DGP Abhay, who is on Koraput visit, asked the concerned SP to investigate the matter and take stern action against the accused persons after receiving the probe report.
Following this incident, Nabarangpur SP Nitin Kushalkar said, “An extremely unfortunate incident has taken place. Two persons have been detained in connection with the case. An investigation is currently underway and the accused will be arrested soon.”
Locals have demanded a government job for one member of the deceased’s family, apart from the compensation of Rs 20 lakh, from the Cheif Minister’s Relief fund, sources said.
